Slander and Libel

August 21, 2008 04:01 by Cyn
In my recent experience, I have witnessed a young man being slandered by women in the neighborhood.  I have watched as this young person has been isolated because of the gossip and slander.  The question becomes: what would be the LDS/Libertarian/Humanitarian way to respond to this kind of slander?  I am incensed at the injustice of it all--and yet I see it all around me.  I remember it happening when I was young, and am ashamed to say that I might have been a part of it myself occasionally...which sincerely pains me now.  What would the Lord have us do in this circumstance.  Any responses?

I'm pretty sure the Lord would have us be kind and compassionate towards everyone, and to avoid any kind of slander or gossip--but there's nothing new there. The sad part of your story is that this behavior has been allowed to happen, and it just reinforces my belief that, until they are taught otherwise, some people can be just plain idiots. It starts in the home, when we are young, and underscores the value of being taught good principles while we are young. A home should be a proactive laboratory for teaching, not just a place to keep bodies until they are old enough to leave.

There is a movement endorsed by over 100 college presidents to re-examine the legal drinking age, with the idea of lowering it from 21 to 18. You Libertarians out there: Does anyone really think that an 18-year-old has enough sense to stay away from binge drinking? Since most participants haven't been taught that that behavior is nothing less than stupid, they usually make the wrong choices, leading to dire consequences. Should we give them that legal right to be stupid, perhaps because they are going to do that anyway? I think not. I would hope that one more thing to protect me from a stupid, 18-year-old drunk is a law saying that they can't legally do that. I know, it isn't much and often doesn't work, but it's better than no law at all.

Garrett - Tertium Quid

Is this website dead already? That was fast. Too bad, interesting subject material and smart people.

I should have known it was only a matter of time until Lisey turned into a Skousen.
